Schönau training centre has been modernised and extended to include a material and garage hall. The original building, which dates back to 1983, is a rational concrete skeleton construction offering a high degree of flexibility. Since the expression of the building is strongly influenced by the external, loadbearing structure, the challenge lay in how to modernise the facade. In general, all interventions are aimed at maintaining or emphasising the strengths of the existing structure and at the same time transforming the building to its new function with as few changes as possible. Thus, for the facade renovation, the logic of the concrete skeleton construction was recognised and reinterpreted with a cladding of prefabricated concrete columns and beams that meet current energy standards.
