Schönau training centre has been modernised and extended to include a material and garage hall. The original building, which dates back to 1983, is a rational concrete skeleton construction offering a high degree of flexibility.
Since the expression of the building is strongly influenced by the external supporting structure, the challenge was how to modernize the facade.
In general, all interventions are aimed at maintaining or emphasising the strengths of the existing structure and at the same time transforming the building to its new function with as few changes as possible.
Thus, for the facade renovation, the logic of the concrete skeleton construction was recognised and reinterpreted with a cladding of prefabricated concrete columns and beams that meet current energy standards.
The new Material and Vehicle Hall has been built into the north embankment, resulting in a logical extension of the existing facility.
On the square side, the concrete structure is designed with metal folding gates. The façade thus refers to the main building and makes the complex appear as a unit.
